Thank you to our community and beyond!
On June 29-30, 2019 everybody came together for the Superhero Car Wash Fundraiser to benefit the Betts Family. There are so many people who helped and contributed I could easily fill a newspaper with their names. I hope everyone feels proud of their contribution and appreciated by the entire Betts Strong Family, but I want to focus on the ONE person who deserves ALL the credit for inspiring the very best of our community. Her name is Avery June Betts. I believe she moved each of us to come together to help her family, not only with medical expenses, but more importantly to show them how much love our community has for them.
On Friday June 28th, 2019 with very heavy hearts, area fire, police, and emergency medical services from all over Michigan came together to give Avery a hero’s funeral. The procession to the cemetery must have been a mile long, all the way with lights flashing as she loved. It was a beautiful tribute. On Saturday and Sunday, we put on our best superhero capes and got to work washing cars to help the Betts family in honor of her. It was a spectacular turnout from volunteers to donors, just about everyone in town helped in one way or another!
Avery June Betts was a gift to this community that will keep on giving. The daughter of a critical care paramedic mom and a firefighter dad, it is no wonder she loved superheroes and aspired to fly. That little apple didn’t fall far from the tree. When she began losing her hair due to the chemotherapy, she insisted on cutting it off to donate to other kids. This fundraiser was not the end of her giving, but rather the beginning. Her parents are already planning an annual event to honor Avery, raise awareness for DIPG, and support families facing similar challenges.
Donations to the Mike Betts Family may still be sent to the Saugatuck Township Fire District or made through the website. Memorial donations may be made in the name of #BettsStrong to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer or to assist in furthering the fight with DIPG .
Thank you to each and every person who helped,
The Betts Strong Family
